Salary:
The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of the qualifications. Overview:
University Advancement ensures that a strong and consistent brand inspires and deepens the University's bond with the public it serves. As such, it advances the brand objectives (and ultimately those of the University Strategic Plan) by executing best communications practices.

Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of University Communications is the chief communications officer responsible for internal and external institutional communications. To maintain the positive image and reputation of the University, this position ensures that communications are clear, accurate and of the highest quality and ethics—all supporting the mission to boldly educate and empower students for success. Additionally, the director oversees a team of professionals who work together to produce, disseminate and leverage news and information through media, print, electronic, audio/visual, social media and web-based communications. This leadership role requires outstanding experience in media management, public relations, crisis communication, and social media. Additionally, the incumbent must possess exceptional organizational skills, originality, and mature judgment.

The Director is a member of the University Advancement Executive Team. This managerial position is covered by the Management Personnel Plan. Supervisory duties include: interviewing, selecting, and training employees; directing work and appraising productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending retention; handling or recommending resolution to employee complaints and grievances and recommending disciplinary action when necessary; planning and proportioning work among employees and determining the techniques to be used; and determining the types of materials, supplies, or equipment to be used.

Position Summary:
Scope of Responsibilities:
• Provide lead communications counsel to the Office of the President, Cabinet, Deans, Director of University Brand Strategy and Marketing, Communication Specialists, and other campus partners to develop cohesive and effective communication strategies. Direct and organize the University's communications planning and outreach to the campus and greater community in alignment with Fresno State's Strategic Plan and University Advancement's Marketing Plan.
• Respond timely to media and public inquiries and disseminate necessary information. Act as the official campus spokesperson on behalf of the University.
• Develop and execute crisis management communications plans.
• Integrate campus news and leverage content across multiple channels.
• Innovate to expand communication channels and partnerships to connect internal and external audiences to University news/stories.
• Advance the reputation of the University through earned media, management of relationships and media training for campus partners.
• Research and prepare various communications, speeches, op-ed articles, information briefings, and background information sheets for the Office of the President and Cabinet Members.
• Guide, distribute and prepare, as needed, University e-communication from the University President and/or Cabinet Members. Create a nimble ‘newsroom' environment, in which to oversee the selection, writing, pitching, producing and tracking of news stories and feature content.
• Oversee the content strategy and effectiveness of the University's social media outreach.
• Act as the authority on historical matters of the University – news, storytelling, events, policies, fact-checking, matters of sensitivity and lessons learned.
• Develop and execute processes and procedures to help manage and streamline the growing volume of communications content from campus.
• Attend various campus meetings and serve on committees in order to coordinate communications, develop media plans, and support publicity.
• Direct the work of staff and student assistants.

Secondary Duties:
• Membership/Chair various internal and external committees, subcommittees, associations, groups, etc.
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated ability to build, develop and effectively lead a productive team.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and effective journalistic style.
• Collaborative and open style when working within the division and across campus.
• Track record of trustworthiness and wise discretion that includes circumstances requiring confidentiality. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated ability to develop positive partnerships with leaders, stakeholders and the media to influence and pursue strategic communication opportunities.
• Strong understanding of and experience in social media as a component of a communications strategy.
• Ability to work extended and unplanned hours.

Minimum Requirements - Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, public relations, or related communications field, and five years of direct, progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications; or,
• Equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience and competence in working with culturally diverse internal and exterior audiences.

Preferred Qualifications
• Communications experience in higher education, at a major institution, or from a professional news organization.
