The University of Notre Dame ( is accepting applications for a Associate Editor, Notre Dame Magazine.

The associate editor is integral to the editorial staff of Notre Dame Magazine, the University's quarterly print publication. In this capacity, the associate editor participates fully in the planning, execution and production of the 96-page print edition, assigning stories, editing articles and writing news pieces, alumni items as well as lengthy profiles and features. But this associate editor is also the staff member most responsible for the magazine's website, a complementary communications vehicle whose offerings extend beyond print but remain consistent with the magazine's philosophy and character. As the website's lead editor, this associate editor will write, assign stories, edit copy, make judgments about content, and perform the technical tasks necessary for maintaining that website. While not supervising other staff members, this editor assigns, guides and supervises the work of freelance writers and works with artists, photographers and videographers contributing to the site.

Essential Responsibilities:
- to edit, write and oversee the vision, planning, management and production of the magazine's website
- to participate in the planning, editing, proofreading and production of the print edition, evaluating manuscript submissions, assigning articles, generating story ideas
- to report and write for the print edition
- to recruit, assign, guide and supervise the work of freelancers and other creatives who contribute to the website, including regular columnists, alumni, faculty staff and students
- to stay current with technical developments in the field of communication, journalism and to maintain the technical competence necessary to perform the role
Notre Dame Magazine is one of the most respected periodicals in higher education and the university's foremost print vehicle. Its quarterly print edition and website represent the University not only with alumni but also other important constituencies. It has a readership of 150,000 and its editorial staff is entrusted with an unusual level of freedom and responsibility for its editorial content. So the caliber of its staff is important. The website shares this level of quality and autonomy, so this editor must have a high degree of maturity and judgment and professional expertise and experience, as well as technical skills. The content in both print and online ranges far beyond the institution and addresses provocative issues which requires sensitivity and judicious decision-making. The position also requires exceptional writing and editing skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree 3 to 4 years experience Must be a talented and experienced writer, editor, journalist with a knowledge of higher education and professional expertise in publishing as well as adept at new media and digital communications.
